Our Camera Gear for Photography and Videography

In this blog post, we are sharing our past & current photography and videography gear. Our gear has definitely changed over time, but anything listed on this this page we highly recommend, even if we are no longer using it.

2024 Photography & Videography Gear

We have been traveling for over 3 years together now and have captured lots of photos and videos together. However, it took us awhile to figure out exactly what camera and other gear we wanted as this equipment is quite the investment.

Here is everything we are currently using for our photos and videos.

CAMERA

Canon EOS R5 C Full Frame Mirrorless Camera This is the camera we use for a majority of our photography and cinematic videography. We purchased this camera instead of the Canon EOS R5 specifically because of its video capability (8k sensor with oversampled 4k at 120fps!). However, we would recommend the R5 if you are not as focused on video content.

LENSES

Canon 15-35mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens This is our go-to lens for all landscape shots due to its wide angle view. We also utilize this lens for most of our portrait photos.

Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens This is our favorite zoom lens to capture scenery and wildlife that is further away.

OTHER TYPES OF CAMERAS

DJI Mini 3 Pro with DJI RC We chose this drone as it is under 250g which allows us to fly on most of our international trips. Even though it is small, it has great image quality. The DJI RC remote is a great upgrade over the DJI RC-N1 remote as it does’t require you to use your phone as the navigation screen.

GoPro HERO8 Black This camera lives on Carl’s backpack strap as it makes it for a quick and easy way to film while walking around busy city streets where you don’t want to much attention or while hiking when you want both hands to be free.

Insta360 X3 This is a recent purchase and we are still learning how to incorporate it into our lineup. We found it super useful for capturing video footage when driving or on hikes when there are stunning views in all directions and you don’t know where to point the camera.

ACCESSORIES

Peak Design Capture Camera Clip Carl LOVES this clip! We use this clip to mount our camera to our backpack when we aren’t using it. It gives us easy access to the camera and keeps our hands free when we aren’t filming/taking photos. It also utilizes the same mount as our tripod, which is super helpful!

Peak Design Travel Tripod This is by far the best tripod we have ever used! Not only is it lightweight but it packs down to the diameter of a water bottle so it is easy to carry with any backpack.

MCKINNON CAMERA PACK 25L This is the backpack we use to carry all of our camera gear and equipment. This pack has specifically made it so much easier when going through airport security as everything is organized and super easy to pull out. Laptops and any other larger electronics have always been a hassle in the past.

PolarPro VND | Peter McKinnon Edition II 2-5 Stop Filter We use this filter when filming in the middle of the day to help cut down on the amount of light coming into the lens.

Tiffen 82mm Circular Polarizing Filter This filter helps to cut down on light reflecting off water.

TELESIN Bag Backpack Shoulder Strap Mount This is attachment we use to mount our GoPro to our backpack strap.

DJI RS 3 Pro Ronin Stabilizer While we don’t always bring a gimbal on every trip, if we do, this is the one we bring. It is super lightweight and easy to pack in a carry on suitcase.

Anker 65W PD Power Bank We carry this with us everywhere we go. It helps to keep our phones and cameras charged while also being compatible with the Canon R5C as external power when recording.

STORAGE

SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO CFexpress Card Type B We have multiples of these cards, which allows us to film in 4K.

SanDisk 128GB Extreme UHS-I SDXC Memory Card We have multiples of these cards, which we use in our Canon EOS R5C for all of our photos.

SAMSUNG Portable SSD T5 We have multiples of these portable hard drives that we carry with us to backup all of our photos and videos from each day when on a trip.

SanDisk 128GB Extreme UHS-I microSDXC Memory Card with SD Adapter We have multiples of these cards, which we use in our GoPro, Drone, and 360 camera.

Synology DiskStation DS418 4-Bay NAS Enclosure We bought this as a way to backup all of our photos and videos from our trips. One of the features that we like the most is that you are able to set up your own cloud network. This allows us to access all of our photos from any of our devices anywhere in the world.

WD 4TB Red Plus 3.5" Internal NAS HDD These are the hard drives we are currently using in our NAS Station.

2020-2022 Photography & Videography Gear

This is some of the gear that we previously used on our trips during 2020 through 2022. While we are no longer using some of these items, we still recommend them and it’s definitely a more affordable set up if you’re just getting started!
