The Ultimate Outer Banks Weekend Itinerary

We have been visiting the Outer Banks for 10+ years so this is the perfect insider guide. We absolutely love the local food options, the breathtaking lighthouses, the absolutely adorable beach and nature landscapes, and the unforgettable feeling of being surrounded by the ocean and sound.

Friday:

  • Check into accommodations in either Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, or Nags Head

    • Closest airport is over 1.5 hours away in Norfolk, VA

    • Traffic will be a factor on Friday so be patient

  • Catch sunset at Jockey’s Ridge State Park

    • Tallest living sand dunes on the US East Coast

Saturday:

  • Breakfast at Duck Donuts (IG: @duckdonuts)

  • Beach time in the morning

    • Beach accesses are everywhere

    • For more secluded beaches: Coquina Beach

  • Lunch at Mama Kwan’s Tiki Bar & Grill (IG: @mamakwans)

    • Hawaiian pork plate is absolutely delicious 😋

    • If longer wait time, you can walk to the beach

  • Bodie Island Light Station in the afternoon

    • Iconic & beautiful Outer Banks lighthouse

    • Restaurant on a pier with amazing views

  • Sunset at Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station

    • Peaceful place for an incredible sand dune sunset

Sunday:

  • Sunrise at the beach

  • Breakfast at Front Porch Cafe (IG: @frontporchobx)

  • Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

    • Lovely walking trails on the Sound with wildlife

  • Wright Brothers National Memorial

    • 1st successful airplane flight occurred here in 1903
